Aurora operates the Prairie Waters Project to reuse treated effluent and South Platte return flows, supplementing potable supply, and uses non-potable recycled water for parks, medians, and select industrial customers under state regulations.
Prairie Waters captures water downstream on the South Platte and conveys it back through riverbank filtration and advanced treatment for delivery into Aurora supply. A separate non-potable system serves irrigation customers such as parks, schools, and golf courses with purple-pipe infrastructure. State Regulation 84 governs reclaimed-water uses and signage requirements. Customers must prevent cross-connections, follow approved use categories, and post identification at hose bibs and access points to alert workers and the public to non-potable status.
Cross-connection violations, unauthorized use, or missing signage can lead to citations, service shutoff, and remediation orders by Aurora Water and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
