Full Breakdown

The Uptown Facade Board, a nine-member body drawn from Uptown Columbus Inc., the Uptown Business Improvement District and the Historic Columbus Foundation, administers facade design standards for properties in the UPT and CRD zoning districts under Columbus's Unified Development Ordinance. Owners must obtain a certificate of facade appropriateness before altering exterior materials, siding, windows, doors, or other visible facade features; the Board judges applications against adopted design guidelines and criteria such as architectural style and historic value. The Board must act within 30 days or the application is deemed approved.

Violations & Fines

Denial of a facade certificate is binding on the Building Official: a building permit cannot be issued for any exterior work an application covered until the certificate is approved. Owners may appeal to the Board of Zoning Appeals within 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this facade review apply citywide in Columbus, Georgia?
No. It applies only to properties zoned UPT or CRD on the Official Zoning Map. Uptown Columbus and the surrounding riverfront core, not the rest of the consolidated government's territory.
What if the Uptown Facade Board never acts on my application?
Failure to act within 30 days of a complete application counts as approval, so a silent Board favors the applicant.
