Under Lakewood Codified Ordinances Chapter 1127 (Accessory Structures) and Chapter 1303 (Building Code adoption of the 2019 OBC/ORC), a carport is classified as an accessory structure and requires a building permit from the Division of Building before erection. Residential setbacks for accessory structures in R1 and R2 districts require a minimum 3-foot side and rear yard setback, and the structure must sit behind the rear plane of the principal dwelling — front-yard carports are prohibited citywide. Height is capped at 15 feet, and lot coverage of all accessory structures combined cannot exceed the district maximum (typically 30% of the rear yard).
