Summary

Sheds in unincorporated Caddo Parish top out at 18 feet under the Unified Development Code's accessory structure standards, and Table 7-1 requires a shed to sit at least five feet from every lot line and stay out of the front yard. A shed without a permanent foundation skips the building permit; one built on a slab needs a permit like any other accessory structure.

City-specific rules exist: Shreveport has its own shed & carport rules rules that differ from Caddo Parish's county-level regulations. If you live in Shreveport, check the city-specific page instead.

Full Breakdown

Section 7.3.A of the Unified Development Code sets the baseline for every detached accessory structure in the parish's unincorporated area, including sheds: a maximum height of 18 feet and a minimum three-foot setback from any lot line, unless the Code sets a tighter number for a specific structure. It does. Table 7-1 in Section 7.4, Permitted Encroachments, gives sheds their own standard: a shed must sit at least five feet from any lot line, is prohibited in the front yard outright, and needs no building permit at all if it has no permanent foundation. Put a shed on a slab, though, and the general permit rule in Section 7.3.A kicks back in, since a building permit is required for any accessory structure the Code doesn't specifically exempt.

Sheds also count against the parish's other accessory-structure caps. No more than two detached accessory structures are allowed on a lot, and sheds are not on the list of structures excluded from that count (detached garages, carports, mailboxes, and playground equipment are). A shed's footprint cannot exceed the footprint of the principal dwelling, and all accessory structures together are capped at 40% coverage of the yard they sit in. A shed also cannot be built before the principal building it serves, and it cannot contain living or sleeping quarters. The Code defines a shed as a prefabricated or kit-built accessory structure not served by heat or plumbing and not requiring a permanent foundation, typically used to store lawn, garden, or recreational equipment.

The Zoning Administrator enforces these standards under Article 19 and can order corrective action for a noncompliant shed; unresolved violations fall under the parish's general penalty at Code of Ordinances § 1-8.

Violations & Fines

A shed built without the required permit, placed in the front yard, or set closer than five feet to a lot line is a Zoning Administrator enforcement matter under UDC Article 19: the Administrator can issue a written compliance order and seek injunctive relief through the Parish Attorney. Absent a UDC-specific fine, Code of Ordinances § 1-8 sets the default at up to 30 days in the parish jail, a fine up to $500, or both, with each day of continued violation a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a shed in Caddo Parish?
Only if it has a permanent foundation. Table 7-1 of UDC Section 7.4 exempts sheds without a permanent foundation from the building permit requirement entirely. A shed set on a slab or footing loses that exemption and needs the same building permit any other accessory structure requires under Section 7.3.A.
How close to my property line can a shed be in Caddo Parish?
Five feet from any lot line. That is the shed-specific standard in UDC Table 7-1, which is tighter than the three-foot baseline the Code sets for accessory structures generally in Section 7.3.A. Sheds are also barred from the front yard regardless of setback distance.
How tall can a shed be?
Up to 18 feet, the same cap the Unified Development Code applies to any detached accessory structure under Section 7.3.A. There is no separate, lower height limit written specifically for sheds, so the general accessory-structure maximum controls unless a variance is approved.
How many sheds can I have on my property?
No more than two detached accessory structures total, and a shed counts toward that cap. Structures excluded from the two-structure limit, such as detached garages, carports, and playground equipment, are listed by name in Section 7.3.A; sheds are not among them, so a second shed uses your last slot.
