Full Breakdown
UDC § 8.5.A.1 sets where residential vehicles may legally sit outside. For single-family detached and attached, two-family, and townhouse dwellings, all required vehicle parking has to be on private driveways, and those spaces cannot encroach onto the public right-of-way (§ 8.5.A.1.b). Beyond the driveway itself, no additional outdoor vehicle parking is permitted anywhere in the front yard, closing off the common workaround of parking a second or third car on the lawn or a gravel strip beside the drive. Tandem parking, one car parked behind another in the same driveway, is expressly allowed for residential uses (§ 8.5.A.1.c).
Where a lot has alley access, single-family detached and attached and two-family dwellings must access parking from the alley, with all vehicle parking located in the rear yard instead of the front (§ 8.5.A.1.d). The driveway itself is capped in width: for a residential driveway serving a garage, § 8.8.A.1.a limits the paved width at the garage to 12 feet, allowing a wider apron up to 25 feet deep before it has to taper back at no more than a 45-degree angle to the standard driveway width.
All curb cuts connecting a driveway to the street need Parish Public Works Department approval, and single-family, two-family, and semi-detached lots are limited to one curb cut, two if the lot is 60 feet or wider and the second creates a circular drive (§ 8.8.B.1-.2).
Violations & Fines
The Zoning Administrator enforces the parking-location and driveway standards, issuing written compliance orders and, where needed, seeking an injunction through the Parish Attorney (UDC § 19.1-19.2). A violation, including a vehicle parked outside the driveway in the front yard or an unapproved curb cut, is fined under UDC § 19.3-19.4, with each day of noncompliance a separate offense.
