Shed permit rules in Ada County, ID β also referred to as storage shed, backyard shed, or accessory building regulations β set size limits, setbacks, and when a building permit is required.
In unincorporated Ada County, a detached accessory structure (shed, garage, workshop) may not exceed 24 feet in height, cannot sit in a required setback or on an easement, and cannot be used as a dwelling. Small sheds 200 sq ft or less may sit in side or rear required yards.
Ada County Code Section 8-4-2 sets accessory-structure standards for unincorporated land. A structure is accessory to a principal permitted dwelling, may not be used as an additional dwelling (except an approved secondary dwelling), and may not be used commercially unless part of an approved home occupation. Accessory structures cannot occupy required setbacks or dedicated easements, and front-yard structures cannot block the view of the main entrance or impede sewer connection. Maximum height is 24 feet, and roofing and finish materials must complement the principal structure. Under Section 8-3-2, detached accessory structures 200 square feet or less and under 10 feet tall may be placed in side or rear required yards. City limits follow city code.
A shed exceeding 24 feet, placed in a required setback, or used as a dwelling is a zoning violation; Development Services may order correction or removal.
