Herndon, VA Animal Ordinances: Beekeeping (2026)

Beekeeping is allowed in Herndon as an accessory residential activity, subject to Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services registration and management consistent with the Virginia Bee Law (VA Code 3.2-4400 et seq.). All beekeepers in Virginia must register apiaries with the State Apiarist. In Herndon, hives should be placed away from property lines, typically with at least 10 to 15 feet setback, and should face away from neighboring yards where possible. Flyway barriers such as 6-foot fences or hedges are recommended when hives are near property lines. Water sources should be provided on-site to prevent bees foraging at neighbor pools. Aggressive colonies must be requeened promptly. HOAs in many Herndon subdivisions restrict or prohibit hives; beekeepers should verify covenants. The Town may address complaints as a nuisance if hives cause recurring neighbor issues.
