Full Breakdown

Herndon enforces strict leash requirements under Chapter 6 of the Town Code, consistent with Fairfax County animal control standards. Every dog must be under direct physical control on a leash not exceeding six feet in length when off its owners property. Verbal control or electronic collars alone are not sufficient to satisfy leash law. The only legal off-leash areas are designated dog parks, including nearby Fairfax County dog parks such as Chandon Park and others outside Town limits. Herndon Centennial Golf Course and Town parks require leashes at all times, and dogs are prohibited on athletic fields and playgrounds.

Violations result in citations typically starting at 50 dollars for a first offense and escalating for repeat violations. 2-6540 et seq. Owners must also carry means to collect and dispose of pet waste, with separate fines for violations.
