Beekeeping in Indianapolis-Marion County regulated under the local code and IC §14-24 (state apiarist program). No published citywide beekeeping ban; local zoning district rules may restrict hive placement. Contact Dept. of Metropolitan Development for current rules.
Under the Indy Rezone ordinance, personal beekeeping of domesticated honeybees is permitted in all zoning districts. Without a personal livestock license, maximum 8 hives, each no larger than 16 cubic feet. Hives must be set back at least 5 feet from property lines (where no barrier exists) and not in front yards or side yards abutting streets. Hives within 20 feet of neighboring doors/windows need either inward-facing openings or a 6-foot flyway barrier. Indiana state law (2019) prevents municipalities from banning beekeeping entirely. Annual state apiary registration required under IC §15-16-5.
Non-compliance may result in orders to remove hives.
