Beekeeping is protected under FL §586.10 statewide preemption. Port St. Lucie cannot ban residential beekeeping. FDACS annual registration required for all colonies.
Florida Statute §586.10 preempts local governments from prohibiting beekeeping. Port St. Lucie residents may maintain honeybee colonies subject to best management practices published by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). All beekeepers must register annually with FDACS regardless of hive count, and hives are subject to inspection for diseases and Africanized bees. Recommended practices include maintaining a water source, using a flyway barrier (6-foot fence or hedge) when hives are within 15 feet of a property line, and providing adequate space for colony size. HOAs and CDDs in Tradition and PGA Village may still restrict beekeeping despite state preemption.
