Nashville has no breed-specific legislation. Metro Code Chapter 8.08 uses a breed-neutral dangerous dog ordinance with two tiers based on behavior, not breed.
Nashville's Metro Code Chapter 8.08 (Vicious Dogs) employs a breed-neutral approach. A Level 1 dangerous dog designation applies to a dog that bites or causes minor injury to a person or domestic animal more than twice in two years; owners may be required to confine, microchip, or attend behavior training. A Level 2 designation applies to more serious incidents. No specific breeds are banned or restricted by Metro Code. Tennessee state law also does not permit breed-specific bans (TCA Β§44-8-413 preempts local BSL). Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) handles dangerous dog proceedings.
Dangerous dog designation triggers owner obligations (confinement, microchip, training). Non-compliance: further enforcement.
