Corpus Christi allows up to 7 hens for personal egg production in residential areas under Section 6-154. No roosters allowed. Coops limited to 5x5x5 feet within a 20x20-foot fenced pen set back 25 feet from neighboring buildings.
Corpus Christi Code Chapter 6, Section 6-154(C) allows urban domestic fowl (chickens) in residential districts with specific requirements. The maximum is 7 birds kept for personal egg production only -- no selling eggs for profit. Roosters are prohibited. Chickens must be housed in a coop (henhouse) no larger than 5 feet wide by 5 feet high by 5 feet long, placed in the backyard. The coop must be completely surrounded by a 6-foot-high secure fenced enclosure (chicken pen) with maximum dimensions of 20 by 20 linear feet. If the property already has a 6-foot perimeter fence enclosing the backyard, a separate chicken pen is not required as long as birds remain enclosed. The pen must be at least 25 feet from any existing dwelling or business not owned by the keeper. Wings must be clipped. The keeper must maintain sanitary conditions to prevent odor and health problems. Any illness or death among the flock must be reported to local health authorities. No permit is required. Other livestock require enclosures at least 100 feet from dwellings and 500 feet from food establishments.
Violation of animal care ordinance: misdemeanor citation with fines. Non-compliant coops or excess birds may result in removal orders. Unsanitary conditions may trigger additional health code violations.
