Corpus Christi allows beekeeping under Chapter 6, Article VII. Texas Agriculture Code Chapter 131 requires registration with the Texas Apiary Inspection Service. The city adopted beekeeping provisions in 2004.
Corpus Christi permits beekeeping under Chapter 6, Article VII of the Code of Ordinances, adopted in 2004. At the state level, Texas Agriculture Code Chapter 131 governs bees and honey. All beekeepers in Texas must register their hives with the Texas Apiary Inspection Service (TAIS) at Texas A&M University, which conducts inspections for disease (particularly American foulbrood). The Coastal Bend Beekeepers Association, based in the Corpus Christi area, provides local resources and guidance. Beekeepers should maintain hives responsibly with adequate water sources to prevent bees from seeking water on neighboring properties. Texas law protects registered beekeepers from nuisance complaints as long as they follow best management practices. Properties with enough acreage may qualify for an agricultural tax exemption through beekeeping under Texas Tax Code provisions. Contact TAIS at (979) 845-9713 for registration and inspection information.
Failure to register with TAIS: state violation. City ordinance violations: misdemeanor citation. Neglected colonies creating a public nuisance may be abated.
