Hamilton, NJ Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 550-73B(1)(i) is the operative livestock and fowl provision, and it applies only "in the RRC Zone," Hamilton's Rural Resource Conservation District along the Township's undeveloped, non-sewered edge. The section allows keeping not more than one saddle horse, one cow or two goats for each 1/2 acre in the area of the parcel of land upon which the same are kept, scaling the allowance to lot size rather than setting a flat cap, and separately allows not more than 100 fowl for each 1/4 acre.

Whatever animals are kept, no saddle horse, cow, goat or fowl shall be housed within a distance of 200 feet from any property line, a setback far larger than the ordinary accessory-building setbacks that apply to sheds and garages in the same zone. This livestock allowance sits alongside, but is separate from, the RRC Zone's general accessory-animal clause in § 550-73B(1)(k), which lets a household keep up to six domestic animals over six months old for individual domestic purposes, with an added carve-out letting any single-family detached home in the RRC or R-25 Zone keep up to six dogs or cats altogether.

Outside the RRC Zone, in the Township's C Conservation District, § 550-72B(5) caps the same kind of keeping at just two domestic animals over six months old per lot, showing how much the RRC's farmland character drives its more permissive livestock numbers.
