La Porte Code of Ordinances Chapter 14 (Animals) regulates the keeping of chickens and livestock on residential property. Chickens may be kept on residential lots subject to restrictions on number, roosters, and distance from neighboring structures. Larger livestock such as horses, cattle, and goats require minimum lot sizes and are restricted in densely developed residential areas.
La Porte's animal ordinance in Chapter 14 addresses keeping poultry and livestock on residential property. Chickens (hens) may be permitted on residential lots of sufficient size, but roosters are typically prohibited due to noise concerns. Coops and enclosures must be setback from neighboring homes and maintained in sanitary condition. The number of hens permitted may depend on lot size. Larger livestock including horses, cattle, goats, and sheep require minimum lot acreage and are generally restricted in standard residential subdivisions. Agricultural zoning districts allow more flexibility for animal keeping. All animals must be kept in sanitary conditions that do not create nuisances including odor, pest attraction, or noise. La Porte Animal Control, operating through the Police Department at (281) 471-3820, enforces animal keeping regulations. Harris County animal regulations may also apply.
Violations of animal keeping regulations can result in fines up to $500 per offense. Animals kept in unsanitary conditions or creating nuisances can be ordered removed. Prohibited roosters must be removed upon notice. Each day of noncompliance may constitute a separate offense.
