In Fort Collins, up to eight chickens and/or ducks may be kept on lots under half an acre (12 up to one acre); roosters are banned and a Humane Society permit is required. Rural unincorporated land follows the county Land Use Code.
Fort Collins City Code Sec. 4-117 allows keeping poultry in residential districts: up to eight hens on lots under one-half acre, up to twelve on half-to-one-acre lots, plus six more per additional half acre. Roosters and drakes are prohibited. A permit from the Larimer Humane Society, training, and a site inspection are required, and the coop must sit at least fifteen feet from abutting property lines. Miniature goats (two pygmy/dwarf) are separately allowed under Sec. 4-121. In unincorporated Larimer County, farm animals are governed by agricultural zoning in the Land Use Code, and established agricultural operations are protected from nuisance suits by Colorado's Right to Farm Act, C.R.S. 35-3.5-102.
Keeping poultry without the required Humane Society permit, keeping roosters, or exceeding the allowed number violates the city animal code and is enforced by the Humane Society through citation.
