Reno prohibits keeping dangerous wild animals and exotic species under RMC Title 6 and NRS 503.597. Big cats, bears, primates, venomous reptiles, and alligators are banned. Most reptiles and small exotics are allowed without permits.
Nevada Administrative Code NAC 503.110 and NRS 503.597 regulate possession of wildlife. Nevada is relatively permissive at the state level for many exotics, but Reno Municipal Code Title 6 and Washoe County Code Chapter 55 impose local bans on dangerous wild animals. Prohibited species typically include non-domestic cats over specific weight thresholds (lions, tigers, leopards, cougars), bears, wolves and wolf-hybrids without specific permits, non-human primates, venomous snakes and lizards, crocodilians, and certain constrictors over specific lengths. Commonly permitted without special permits: non-venomous snakes and lizards, tropical fish, small mammals (rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, most pet rodents), parrots and other caged birds, hedgehogs, and sugar gliders. Falconry is regulated by the Nevada Department of Wildlife under state and federal permits. USDA licensed exhibitors and accredited sanctuaries operate under separate federal oversight.
