Chattanooga encourages microchipping for dogs and cats handled by McKamey Animal Center, and impounded animals are scanned for chips before adoption or euthanasia under City Code Chapter 4.
Chattanooga partners with McKamey Animal Center as the city pound under CCO Chapter 4. Impounded dogs and cats are scanned for microchips on intake, and registered owners are contacted before the redemption clock expires. Microchipping is not strictly mandated citywide, but adopted animals from McKamey are chipped at the shelter before release. Owners are responsible for keeping registry contact information current; an outdated chip record will not stop reclaim fees from accruing while the animal is held.
Failing to reclaim a chipped pet within the hold period results in impound fees, possible adoption to a new owner, or euthanasia per shelter policy.
