Evansville, IN Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

(a) Requirement. Owners or custodians must have their dog, cat or ferret microchipped unless medically contraindicated (meaning the dog, cat or ferret’s veterinarian determined it unsafe to do so). Animals without a microchip are subject to fines under EMC 6.05.180.

(b) Limited Veterinarian Exception. The burden is on the owner or custodian of the dog, cat or ferret to show written proof from the dog, cat, or ferret’s veterinarian stating the reason or reasons, in reasonable detail, the animal has not and, in some cases, should not be microchipped. The Animal Care and Control Operations Manager or Assistant Operations Manager shall determine, on a case-by-case basis, whether the owner or custodian of the dog, cat or ferret has met this burden. If the owner or custodian meets the burden, then the fine shall be waived under EMC 6.05.180.

(c) Microchip Resources. Microchipping is commonly offered by veterinarians, local humane societies, and the City’s Animal Care and Control Department. Fees are listed in subsection (A)(9) of this section for the City’s microchipping services. It does not matter where the procedure is done, as long as the dog, cat or ferret has a valid microchip.

(d) Dogs, Cats or Ferrets Under Care of Animal Care and Control. For the sake of clarity, any animal under the care of the City’s Animal Care and Control department shall be microchipped by the Animal Care and Control Department before being released.
