Kankakee County, IL Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Section 10-2(h), part of the county's inoculation and registration chapter, states that "all dogs and cats in the county must be microchipped for identification at the time of their rabies vaccination," with puppies and kittens required to be chipped by nine months of age. The microchip number becomes the animal's official animal control registration number under section 10-2(i), which also sets a separate registration fee tied to the microchip for unaltered dogs and cats while registering a spayed or neutered animal at no cost, with the fees collected feeding the county's animal population control fund.

The requirement dovetails with section 10-12, which separately requires the county animal control department to microchip any animal before releasing it back to its owner, and with section 10-13's shelter-intake rule that every stray dog or cat be scanned for a microchip within 24 hours of intake and rescanned before any transfer, adoption or euthanasia. 00 for one applied at adoption, on top of the vaccination and registration charges set in section 18-1. A veterinarian who inoculates a dog or cat outside the county still must see that the registration and microchip fee reach the county's animal control department within 15 days.
