Kane County, IL Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Kane County Code Section 5-10 requires the animal control administrator to scan every impounded dog, cat, or other animal for a microchip as part of intake. Where the scan or other records identify an owner, the department must give not less than seven business days' notice before disposing of the animal, delivered by phone, mail, or hand-delivery to the owner's last known address; an affidavit or testimony from the administrator or an authorized agent who sent that notice counts as prima facie evidence the owner received it.

If the animal carries no identification the department can recognize, the impoundment hold shortens to five business days before disposition. A licensed veterinarian examining an injured or sick impounded animal can shorten either hold period further to relieve suffering or stop disease spread. Redemption itself is conditioned on proof of current rabies inoculation and registration, or payment for both, plus payment to have a dog microchipped if it is not identifiable, under Sections 5-10 and 5-11. 00 microchip fee "where applicable," charged separately from boarding, pickup, and rabies-vaccine fees. Kane County Animal Control, not local police, administers scanning, notice, and the fee schedule.
