Kane County, IL Animal Ordinances: Cat Rules (2026)

Under Animal Control Ordinance § 8, every owner of a cat four months or older must have the cat inoculated against rabies and registered, with a serially numbered tag issued per vaccination. A three-year vaccine can extend the interval to three years if the cat is over 12 months at inoculation. "Feral cats", unsocialized cats born wild or abandoned, are defined in § 2.9c and are exempt from rabies inoculation unless presented for sterilization. Section 9.4 makes it unlawful to feed cats or wildlife (except birds) in a way that creates a public-health or safety hazard. Cats also count as "companion animals" under the ordinance's humane-care duties.
