Westland, MI Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

The owner of a vicious or dangerous dog must:

(1)Be 18 years of age or older;(2)Have such dog tattooed or microchipped, registered and licensed with the city;(3)Provide information including the name, address, phone number, city and county from whom or where the owner acquired such dog;(4)Provide proof of at least $100,000.00 in liability insurance;(5)Notify the animal control officer or his agent within a 24-hour period when the owner has knowledge that such dog is at large, unconfined, has attacked an individual or other animal, or that such dog has died; and(6)Notify the animal control officer or his agent when such dog is sold or given away to another person. The notification shall include the name, address, phone number and city of the new owner.(7)When transporting the dog, confine it in a closed, locked vehicle to prevent opportunities for escape and in a manner sufficient to prevent children from coming into contact with the dog through an open window in the vehicle.
