Taylor, MI Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Sec. 6-2(b) of the Taylor Code states that domestic animals, dogs, cats and nonbreeding rabbits, respectively, are limited to a total of three animals age four months or older per household. The 'respectively' and 'total' language means the three-animal ceiling is shared across dogs, cats and rabbits together, not a separate allowance of three dogs plus three cats plus three rabbits; a household with two dogs and one cat is already at the limit and cannot add a rabbit without exceeding it. Animals under four months old are not counted toward the cap, which gives owners of a new litter a grace period before the limit applies.

The limit sits directly beside Sec. 6-2(a)'s prohibition on wild or exotic animals, fowl and livestock, and both provisions fall under the same Sec. 6-2 heading, 'Compliance with chapter required.' Sec. 6-3(b) makes any keeping of an animal contrary to Chapter 6, including keeping more than three, a nuisance per se, and Sec. 6-4 assigns enforcement to the director of the department of public works, the animal control officer and the Taylor Police Department. A private kennel license under Article III of Chapter 6 is the route for anyone who wants to keep four or more animals for hobby, sporting or breeding purposes, since Sec. 6-1 defines a 'private kennel' as a premises where four or more domestic animals are harbored for those non-commercial purposes.
