Fontana prohibits feeding wild animals under Chapter 18 nuisance rules and Chapter 4 animal provisions. Feeding coyotes, raccoons, and skunks draws them into yards and is treated as a nuisance even without a named wildlife-feeding ordinance.
Fontana sits on the edge of the San Bernardino foothills with regular coyote, skunk, raccoon, opossum, and mule deer activity, especially north of Summit Avenue in the wildland-urban interface. The City does not maintain a stand-alone wildlife feeding ordinance, but intentionally feeding wildlife is enforced as a public nuisance under Chapter 18 and as a disturbance under Chapter 4 when it draws predators into neighborhoods. California Department of Fish and Wildlife also takes enforcement action on intentional feeding of big game and predators statewide. Unintentional feeding is the most common issue: uncovered trash, pet food left outside, fallen fruit not collected, and improperly stored chicken feed all act as attractants. Residents who see aggressive coyotes should report incidents to CDFW and to Fontana Animal Services at (909) 350-7651. Hummingbird feeders and songbird seed are allowed; the rule targets species that become a public safety concern.
