Lansing, MI Building Safety: Building Permits (2026)

1501 et seq. Under subsection (a), the City assumes responsibility for administering and enforcing the Act and the State-approved code within its jurisdictional boundaries, meaning building permits in Lansing are issued and inspected against the state code rather than a locally drafted set of construction standards. Subsection (b) directs that every reference elsewhere in the Lansing Code of Ordinances to 'the building code' or a national or international building code means the State-approved building code adopted here. Subsection (c) sets the conflict rule: if a Lansing ordinance conflicts with the Michigan Building Code, the state code controls, and if the Michigan Building Code itself conflicts with the Act, the Act controls.

Subsection (d) preserves the City's other existing powers and keeps pre-existing local administration and enforcement ordinances in force to the extent they do not conflict with the Act. 98, which designates building inspectors and the Building Official as the City officials authorized to issue municipal civil infraction citations, directing violators either to court or to the Municipal Ordinance Violations Bureau, under the citation procedure in Chapter 203. 99(b).
