Full Breakdown

The Development Services Department issues roofing permits under Municipal Code §§ 12-361 through 12-363, covering the removal, repair, or replacement of roofing materials on one- and two-family dwellings and duplexes. A permit is required whenever the job covers more than 500 square feet and must be obtained before work starts, naming either the property owner or a state-licensed roofing contractor. Contractors must carry a valid state roofing license while working in the city. Repairs of 500 square feet or less, and roofing done as part of new one- and two-family dwelling construction, are exempt from the permit requirement.

Violations & Fines

Violating the roofing permit article is a Class A offense under § 12-57(a), with each day of continuing violation a separate offense; a second or later offense becomes a Class B offense.
