Oklahoma City requires automatic fire sprinkler systems in many new commercial, multifamily, and large single-family buildings under the International Building and Fire Codes adopted in Chapter 16.
Oklahoma City has adopted the International Building Code and International Fire Code through Chapter 16 of the Municipal Code, which generally require NFPA 13, 13R, or 13D sprinkler systems in new commercial occupancies above defined size thresholds, multifamily buildings, and certain assembly and institutional uses. Existing buildings undergoing major alteration or change of use may also trigger sprinkler retrofits. Single-family residential sprinklers are not mandated citywide but may be required for very large homes or specific subdivisions. Plans must be designed by qualified engineers, permitted through OKC Development Services, and inspected by OKC Fire Marshals before occupancy.
Occupying a structure without required sprinklers, modifying a system without permits, failing annual inspections, or disabling system components for any reason can result in stop-work orders and fines.
