Grand Rapids, MI Building Safety: Childcare Center Rules (2026)

Section 5.9.09 of the Zoning Ordinance sets site-design standards for child care centers: outdoor play areas must be sufficient to meet State licensing regulations and enclosed by a fence at least four feet high, using an open, decorative style if the fence sits in the front yard. Vehicle ingress and egress must be placed as far as possible from street intersections, and an on-site drive for dropping off and picking up children must be provided near the entrance, sized to keep cars from stacking into the public street or blocking sidewalks. A child care center may also operate as an accessory use to a religious institution or other institutional use if it meets these requirements.
