Kankakee County, IL Building Safety: Carbon Monoxide Detectors (2026)

Section 105-186 states that "the technical codes listed in this section are hereby adopted as the building codes of the county for the control of buildings and structures as herein provided," and item (12) of that list names the "Illinois Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act 094-0741" as one of those adopted codes. The county did not write its own carbon monoxide chapter; it enforces the Act through the same permitting and inspection machinery that runs the rest of Chapter 105. No construction, alteration, or equipment installation regulated by the chapter may begin without a written application and permit from the Building Division under Sec.

105-66, and the code enforcement officer has authority to "enter at any reasonable hour any building, structure, or premises in the jurisdiction to enforce the provisions of this chapter, as outlined in section 105-186" per Sec. 105-72(c). Violations, including failure to comply with an adopted code, are handled under Sec. 00, with each day treated as a separate offense. The Building Division may also suspend an active building permit under Sec. 105-131(f) for any violation of the Code until it is abated or cured, and unresolved cases go to the county's legal counsel for court action to compel compliance.
