Sioux Falls, SD Building Safety: Door Locking Hardware (2026)

Under City of Sioux Falls Code § 150.079, doors on dwelling units covered by the building security subchapter must resist forced entry: single-swinging doors and the active leaf of double doors need an approved exterior key-operated deadbolt with a minimum one-inch throw, actuated by a key outside and a knob or thumb-turn inside, that locks against return by end pressure when projected. Strike plates need four 3-inch No. 8 screws with three-fourths-inch stud penetration, and exposed hinges need nonremovable pins or a mechanical interlock. Sliding doors need an interior-activated locking mechanism. The subchapter applies to Group R2/R3 apartment openings and one- and two-family dwellings and town houses, including garage-to-dwelling doors, with exceptions for openings well above grade.
