St. Tammany Parish, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 300-2.A of the parish's Unified Development Code requires any owner or authorized agent to apply for and obtain a permit from the Director of Permits and Inspections before erecting, installing, enlarging, altering, repairing, removing, converting, or replacing an electrical system in unincorporated St. Tammany Parish. The parish adopted the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code by reference under Section 300-1.C.1 to govern that construction. Only minor repair work is exempt: replacing lamps or plugging approved portable equipment into approved permanently installed receptacles does not need a permit under Section 300-2.B.2, and the code carves out electrical equipment used for radio and television transmission, though wiring for its power supply still needs one.

Section 2-684 sets the fee schedule: commercial electrical work costs one percent of the executed electrical contract with a $140.00 minimum fee, plus a $20.00 electrical connection permit. Residential work costs a $140.00 base fee plus $2.00 per circuit, a $140.00 six-month vacancy inspection fee, and the same $20.00 connection permit. A re-inspection costs $100.00 under Section 2-688, registration and renewal run $100.00 under Section 2-690, and paying by credit card or e-check adds a three percent processing fee under Section 2-675.

An electrical permit expires if work does not start within 180 days of issuance, if work stops for 180 days after starting, or if the job is not finished within two years, per Section 300-2.I; the Director can grant 90-day extensions on written request.
