Texas City, TX Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 151 of the Texas City Code of Ordinances runs electrical work. Section 151.050 requires a permit to do any electrical construction of any character, install any electrical wiring, apparatus or equipment, or make extensions or changes to existing wiring systems within or attached to any building. The person, firm or corporation installing the work applies in writing to the Electrical Inspector, with plans, specifications and schedules needed to show conformity. Under § 151.051, permits are issued only to the holder of an electrical contractor's license, or an electrical sign contractor's license for signs.

Section 151.035 requires a state license and proof of liability insurance to be registered with the Building Official. A bona fide homeowner can install wiring personally in his or her own homestead under § 151.052, but must file approved plans, satisfy the Electrical Inspector as to ability, pay the fee, request inspection and receive a certificate of approval, and cannot employ anyone to assist. Fees under § 151.053 include $0.40 for each outlet, lighting fixture, switch and receptacle, $5 per A/C unit, $4 for a service and meter loop up to and including 100 amps, and a $10 fee for issuing each permit.

Reinspection costs $25 for the first and $50, $100, $150 and so on after. Section 151.057 sets notice deadlines: before 5:00 p.m. the preceding day for morning inspections and before 12:00 noon the same day for afternoon inspections, with 48 hours exclusive of Sundays and holidays to inspect. Under § 151.055, no one can use current in new wiring until the City Inspector issues the final certificate of inspection. Section 151.080(A) adopts the National Electrical Code, 2023 edition, as the minimum standard for all electrical wiring, devices and equipment.
