Jefferson Parish, LA Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Sec. 3 makes an elevator maintenance certificate mandatory for every passenger or freight elevator car, escalator, moving staircase, or man-lift operating in the parish. The building owner must have each unit and its associated equipment inspected on an annual basis by an ASME Qualified Elevator Inspector or a holder of a Louisiana State Elevator license. That inspector reports to both the owner and the Department, identifying each device and attesting to safe operation. 00 payment, it issues a certificate valid for twelve months from the date of issuance, and the certificate must be conspicuously posted on or in the device, or made readily available on request.

One- and two-family dwellings are excused from the annual report but still need an initial inspection by an ASME Qualified Elevator Inspector or Louisiana-licensed elevator inspector when the equipment is first installed. Installation, replacement, or repair work (other than material lifts, which are separately regulated) must be done by a qualified elevator company, and the licensed installer must notify the Code Official to schedule an inspection and pay required fees once the work is finished.
