Elevators in Travis County commercial and multifamily buildings are regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation under TX Health and Safety Code Ch. 754 and 16 TAC Ch. 74. Annual inspection and certificate of compliance required.
TDLR registers all elevators, escalators, and related equipment in Texas. Owners must contract with a TDLR-licensed inspector for annual inspection and a licensed contractor for installation and major alterations. Certificate of Compliance must be posted in the cab or adjacent to controller. ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators applies. Private residence elevators in single-family homes are exempt from TDLR inspection but must meet ASME A17.1 Part 5.3. Non-compliance penalties up to $5,000 per violation per day under 16 TAC 60.
