Pocatello, ID Building Safety: Fire Sprinkler Requirements (2026)

Pocatello's building and fire codes, both adopted at City Code § 15.02.010, use the word 'recommended,' not 'required,' for residential sprinklers. Amended Section 602.1 of the 2018 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code states that an approved automatic sprinkler system is recommended in new buildings required to meet the Class 1 ignition-resistant construction standard set out in Chapter 5 of that code, and that any installed system must follow nationally recognized standards. Class 1 ignition-resistant construction applies inside the wildland-urban interface areas that the fire code official declares under amended Section 302.1, so the sprinkler recommendation is tied to that geography rather than applying citywide.

Because Section 602.1 recommends rather than mandates, a builder who skips a sprinkler system in qualifying new construction is not automatically in violation of the general misdemeanor penalty at amended Section 110.4.7, which attaches to failures to comply with an actual requirement of the code; a homeowner who wants the added protection can still specify one and have it inspected under § 15.04.070's right-to-inspect authority. Pocatello separately adopted NFPA 13, 13D and 13R, the standards that govern how any sprinkler system, whether recommended or voluntarily installed, must be designed and installed once a builder chooses to include one.
