Wichita Code Chapter 15 requires automatic fire sprinkler systems in most new commercial buildings, multifamily housing of four or more units, and certain occupancy renovations. Sprinklers must be installed by Kansas-licensed contractors and tested annually.
Wichita adopts the International Fire Code and International Building Code through Chapter 9 and Chapter 15. Sprinklers are required in most new commercial buildings above the small-occupancy threshold, in apartment buildings of four or more units, in assembly occupancies above set capacities, and in some existing buildings undergoing major renovation or change of use. NFPA 13, 13R, or 13D systems are accepted depending on occupancy. Installations must be permitted by the Office of Central Inspection and inspected by the Wichita Fire Department. Annual inspection, testing, and maintenance is required, and impairment notice must be given when systems are taken out of service.
Permit revocation, certificate of occupancy denial, fines, and required retrofits when unpermitted occupancy changes are discovered during inspection.
