West Bloomfield, MI Building Safety: Plumbing Permits (2026)

Under Township Code § 8-1, West Bloomfield assumes responsibility for administering and enforcing the Stille-DeRossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act (Public Act 230 of 1972) and the Michigan State Construction Code, which incorporates the Michigan Plumbing Code alongside the residential, building, electrical, mechanical and energy codes. Section 8-8 separately requires that any master, journeyman or apprentice plumber, along with general contractors, electricians, mechanical contractors and other regulated trades, hold the required state license or registration under Section 23a of the Stille-DeRossett-Hale Act, MCL 125.1523a, before performing any work on a building or structure within the township.

Licenses must be produced for inspection on request by the building inspector, plumbing inspector or any code enforcement officer. The Building Department, its plan reviewers and inspection personnel are the designated enforcing agency under Section 8-2. A first violation of the permit or licensing requirements draws a $150 municipal civil infraction fine; a second or subsequent violation within two years draws $300, and the township issues a stop-work order and revokes the relevant permits. Anyone who racks up three municipal civil infractions for unlicensed work or operating an unlicensed worksite in the township is barred from operating any worksite in West Bloomfield and will not be issued further permits.
