In unincorporated St. Lucie County, maximum building height is set by zoning district in LDC Table 7-10 (LDC 7.04.01.A). Detached residential garages, carports and storage buildings may exceed the house height but are capped at 20 feet (25 feet in agricultural districts).
St. Lucie County LDC 7.04.01.A prohibits any structure that exceeds the maximum height shown in Table 7-10 for its zoning district. For accessory buildings, LDC 8.00.02.C allows non-commercial garages, carports and enclosed storage structures in residential districts to exceed the primary structure's height but limits them to 20 feet, set back at least 5 feet behind the front facade. In agricultural districts, LDC 8.00.02.D allows the same structures up to 25 feet. Confirm the principal-building height for your specific district in Table 7-10.
Structures exceeding the height limit require a variance; otherwise permits are denied or the excess construction must be removed.
