Florida has no statewide leash law, so St. Lucie County sets the rule. Dogs must be under the owner's restraint, and any dog classified dangerous must be muzzled and leashed whenever outside its enclosure.
In unincorporated St. Lucie County, Chapter 6 requires dogs to be kept under restraint (secured by a leash or lead) or confined to the owner's property; Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce enforce their own leash codes. County Code Sec. 6-23(m) imposes the strictest restraint on any dog classified dangerous: it may not be outside a proper enclosure unless muzzled, leashed, and under a competent person's control. Enforcement is handled by St. Lucie County Animal Safety, Service & Protection.
Violating the dangerous-dog restraint section is a noncriminal infraction punishable by a fine not exceeding $500 per Sec. 6-23(p).
