Port St. Lucie forbids owners of unimproved (vacant) property from letting weeds, grass, and undergrowth exceed twenty-four inches within fifteen feet of a road or drainage right-of-way. Improved lots must stay under twelve inches; the county enforces overgrowth as a nuisance.
Port St. Lucie splits its weed rules by lot type. On improved property, Section 41.08 caps grass and weeds at twelve inches. On unimproved (vacant) property, Section 43.04 (Unimproved real property nuisances) makes it unlawful to allow weeds, grass, undergrowth, bushes, or other vegetation to exceed twenty-four inches for at least fifteen feet from the road or drainage right-of-way. Unincorporated St. Lucie County treats excessive grass and weed overgrowth as an unsanitary nuisance under its code compliance program. Invasive species such as Brazilian pepper are separately targeted.
After notice, the city or county may abate (mow/clear) the lot and lien the property for costs. Port St. Lucie limits enforcement on a given unimproved lot to once every twelve months except in defined cases.
