St. Lucie County has no breed ban. Florida law bars local governments from regulating dogs by breed, weight, or size, so pit bulls and other breeds cannot be singled out for restrictions.
Under Florida Statutes Sec. 767.14, local governments may adopt tougher dangerous-dog rules, but they may not enact any regulation specific to breed, weight, or size. St. Lucie County's Sec. 6-23 dangerous-dog ordinance is behavior-based, applying to dogs that bite, attack, or menace regardless of breed. This 2023 amendment ended the ability of Florida cities and counties to maintain breed-specific ordinances. Owners of any breed are subject only to the county's dangerous-dog and aggressive-animal provisions when a specific incident occurs.
Breed alone cannot trigger penalties; enforcement flows from an individual dog's dangerous or aggressive classification under Sec. 6-23 and Sec. 6-33.
