St. Petersburg limits residential building heights by zoning district, with Neighborhood Traditional districts capped near 24 feet and downtown districts allowing greater height under Chapter 16.
Chapter 16 of the St. Petersburg City Code sets maximum building heights and stories for each zoning district. In Neighborhood Traditional (NT) single-family districts, principal structures generally do not exceed approximately 24 feet measured to the mean roof height. Suburban single-family districts typically allow up to 30 to 35 feet. Multi-family and downtown districts allow significantly greater height with design and step-back requirements. Accessory structures are usually capped at the principal building height or lower, and some districts require side and rear setbacks to scale up with height. The 2025 Residential LDR Update introduced floor-area-ratio (FAR) caps and additional compatibility standards for traditional neighborhoods.
Structures exceeding district height limits cannot pass final inspection and may be subject to removal of the over-height portion, stop-work orders, and code enforcement penalties.
