Gordon County, GA Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Section 4.03.07 of the Gordon County, Georgia Unified Land Development Code, titled Vehicle Repair Shops (Major Repair), is the standard for repairing cars, trucks, boats, motorsport vehicles and similar vehicles as a business. Subsection (A) makes those shops permissible in the C-H zoning district, subject to the standards of the district and the section. Subsection (B) defines major repair as the repair, replacement, modification, adjustment or servicing of the power plant or drive-train or other major components, including, but not limited to, body work. The section names no residential or agricultural district, so it places paid engine, transmission or body work in C-H rather than in a home garage in unincorporated Gordon County.

The site standards show the scale of the use. Drainage pits for oil and fluid change must be inside an enclosed structure, and applications must include proof of compliance with State and federal regulations on handling and disposal of oil and automotive fluids. Table 4.03.07(D) requires buffers of 2.0 times the Section 4.07.06 requirement, bars vibration or electromagnetic interference discernable on adjacent properties, requires outside storage in a side or rear yard screened by an opaque fence or evergreen planting at least six (6) feet high, and prohibits loudspeakers and paging equipment.

A homeowner is left with the home occupation rules in Section 5.01.00. Vehicle repair does not appear in the Section 5.01.01(B) list of home occupations, and a use not listed is measured under Section 5.01.01(C) against the tasks and activities of a listed use. Whatever the classification, Section 5.01.02 bars a home occupation from being conducted in an accessory building, prohibits outside storage of materials, forbids noise, smoke, odor, vibration or electrical interference beyond the property line, and bars customer visits between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Section 5.02.01(F)(5) also keeps accessory structures in residential districts from any commercial operation except as provided in Section 5.01.02.
