Full Breakdown

Linn County Code § 107-113(h)(3)e.1(ii) prohibits maintenance, repair, body work, or painting of motor vehicles, recreational equipment, or boats as a home occupation in every zoning district: permitted or conditional. The only carve-out: vehicles or equipment the homeowner already owns and uses for the home occupation may still be maintained on the premises. A backyard or garage repair shop serving outside customers isn't a permit-eligible home occupation here; no conditional use permit can authorize it. This applies to unincorporated Linn County; Cedar Rapids and the county's other cities set their own rules.

Violations & Fines

Running a customer-facing auto repair, body, or paint operation as a home occupation is prohibited outright: no conditional use permit can authorize it, and the zoning administrator can order the use stopped.
