Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a license to open a pawnshop in unincorporated Washoe County?
Yes. WCC § 25.353 makes it unlawful to operate a pawnbroker business or secondhand store without first obtaining a license from the county license division, in addition to any state license required under NRS Chapters 244 and 647.
Can a Washoe County pawnbroker take a car title as loan collateral?
Only with a separate auto pawn license under § 25.3571. That license cannot be issued to anyone who does not already hold a valid pawnbroker license, and it applies whenever the loan lets the borrower forfeit the vehicle if unredeemed.

What happens if a pawnbroker employee lacks a work permit?
It is unlawful for a pawnbroker to employ anyone without a valid sheriff-issued work permit under § 25.3575(2)(a). Employees must obtain a five-year permit under § 25.3573, and the sheriff denies permits to applicants with recent theft-related convictions.
