Taylor, MI Cannabis Regulations: Buffer Zones (2026)

Article 11, Adult Use Marihuana, applies its location criteria to every marihuana establishment type except safety compliance operations. Sec. 11.02(2)(a) sets six separate 2,500-foot buffers: from a preexisting private or public K-12 school, from a preexisting church, temple, synagogue or other place of worship, from any district within the Taylor city boundary zoned residential, from a preexisting public library, from a preexisting state-licensed child care center, public playground, public pool or youth center, and from another marihuana establishment. Sec. 11.02(2)(b) measures that distance in a straight line from the nearest structure of the protected use to the front main entrance of the nearest structure housing the marihuana establishment, and puts the burden on the applicant to prove compliance.

Sec. 11.02(1)(c) separately bars any marihuana establishment from operating in a residential zoning district or a residential unit outright. The buffers do not apply only where the marihuana establishment and the protected use are separated by the travel lanes of an interstate highway or railroad tracks, and the ordinance specifically excludes Telegraph Road and the Telegraph-I-75 connector from counting as an interstate highway for that exception. Growers, processors, secure transporters, safety compliance labs and retailers are further confined to the I-1 and I-2 industrial districts, and only the city council may grant a variance from Article 11, after review by planning and any appeal to the zoning board of appeals.
