Building Permits

Broome County requires a building permit before any construction, alteration, relocation or demolition work covered by its Uniform Code authority begins, per Code § 210-2. The county's Code Enforcement Official issues permits only for county-owned buildings, special-purpose county units and the Off-Track Betting Corporation; most private construction elsewhere falls to the town, village or city with jurisdiction. Permits run two years and cost is set by the county fee schedule.

Building Inspections

Broome County requires every permitted construction project to pass staged inspections before work is enclosed, covering location, foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC, under Code § 210-4. Existing buildings the county already regulates get separate periodic firesafety inspections instead: every 12 months for public-assembly and multi-dwelling common areas, every 24 months for other structures, but never a routine inspection of an occupied dwelling unit.
