Coeur d'Alene, ID Curfew Laws: Juvenile Curfew (2026)

Chapter 9.44 of the Coeur d'Alene Municipal Code defines curfew hours in two blocks. On Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, curfew runs from 10:30 P.M. until 5:00 A.M. of the following day. On Friday and Saturday, it runs from 12:00 midnight until 5:00 A.M. A minor is anyone less than eighteen years of age.

The code creates three separate offenses under § 9.44.020. First, a minor commits an offense by being present in a public place, in a private residence without the permission of a parent or guardian, on private property open to the public, or on the premises of any establishment within the city during curfew hours. Second, a parent or guardian commits an offense by knowingly permitting a minor to be present, without a specific purpose and without a parent or guardian, in a public place or on establishment premises during curfew hours. Third, the owner, operator or any employee of an establishment commits an offense by knowingly allowing a minor to be on the premises without a parent's or guardian's permission, unless the establishment is rendering emergency services or is a designated safe place and the minor is seeking emergency help, shelter or care.

An establishment has a defense if the owner, operator or employee asked the minor to leave and promptly notified the Coeur d'Alene city police department that the minor was on the premises and refused to go.

Section 9.44.030 lists exceptions: the minor is accompanied by a parent or guardian; on an errand at a parent's or guardian's direction; in a motor vehicle involved in interstate travel; working or traveling to or from work; involved in an emergency; attending an adult-supervised school, religious, recreational or similar activity sponsored by the City, a civic organization or a similar entity; or exercising first amendment rights. Errands, work trips and activity travel must be made without any unauthorized detour, delay or stop.

Under § 9.44.040, a parent, guardian or other adult with legal care and custody who refuses to come immediately to the police station when the police notify them, and take charge of the minor, commits a separate offense. Section 9.44.050 separately makes it unlawful for a person under eighteen to leave the Coeur d'Alene residence of a parent or guardian without permission and with intent to absent themselves.
