Sunnyvale enforces a juvenile curfew prohibiting minors under 18 from being in public places during overnight hours without a parent or valid exception.
Under Sunnyvale Municipal Code Chapter 9.12, it is unlawful for any person under the age of 18 to be present in any public place or on the premises of any establishment during curfew hours of 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights, and 12:00 midnight to 5:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Exceptions include minors accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, minors traveling to or from work, school, or religious activities, minors engaged in errands directed by a parent, minors attending official government or school functions, and emergencies. Parents who knowingly allow or permit a curfew violation can also be cited. First offenses are typically handled with a warning or citation, while repeat offenses may result in fines up to 100 dollars or diversion to youth programs through the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
